Tom McGrath: Blue Ridge by Headlights

The L Magazine, April 2010

Why are there paintings of palm trees in the young New York-based painter's ambitious and atmospheric new show, you ask? Why, when there are no motels or tropical palms in the Blue Ridge Mountains National Park, are we looking at expressionistic neon-hued paintings of Floridian landscapes glimpsed through blinds? Well, McGrath painted these works over a series of recent residencies in Tennessee, France and, indeed, Miami. These diverse landscapes all become eerily, seductively mysterious with his minimal brushstrokes and Lynchian lighting effects.
