Elizabeth Subrin: Her Compulsion to Repeat

The L Magazine, February 2010

If you don’t already know, find out why film and art critics have been fawning over Subrin’s short video and film works for nearly twenty years. In addition to two newer works, this show serves as a miniature retrospective organized around themes of repetition and re-enactment, including a crucial trilogy spanning 1995 to 2000. The recent pieces are the 2-channel video Sweet Ruin–which posits itself as lost footage from Michelanglo Antonioni’s abandoned 1966 film Technically Sweet–and the new installation Lost Tribes and the Promise Land, which juxtaposes views of Williamsburg right after 9/11, with shots from the same place in 2008.
